With a view to setting a starting point in the understanding of migratory phenomena within Europe, EPN is currently conducting a study on the migration of Italian citizens to Belgium in recent years in collaboration with FILEF and ACLI Belgique.

The notion of new migration refers to the hypothesis for which the current migratory flow of Italian citizens who are moving to Belgium has very different and peculiar features compared to other flows preceding the economic crisis started in 2008.

The study aims both at

  1. exploring their different construals in relation to themselves; the notions of ‘migration’ and ‘migrant’; their family situation; their national identity; their relationships with members of their national group; their employment situation; their prospects for their future; and
  2. delineating the distinctive influence factors of this migratory flow which is characterized, among else, by an unprecedented easiness and economic affordability of mobility between European countries thanks to low-cost airlines; an increasing adaptation of bureaucratic procedures and political response for European nationals to changing country of residence; a fluid and stratified European identity.

Results are expected to be published by July 2019.
